Understanding Micellar Water and Toner
I know how difficult it can be to choose the right products for your facial care routine. Micellar water or toner? If you’ve ever asked yourself that question (and honestly, who hasn’t?), I’m here to help you see things more clearly.
What is micellar water?
Micellar water is kind of my everyday ally. It cleanses, removes makeup, and gently purifies the skin, all in a single step. Thanks to its micelles, it removes residue from makeup, excess sebum, and impurities without being harsh on the epidermis. It is ideal for sensitive skin and dry skin because it does not require rinsing. What’s more, it leaves a feeling of freshness on clean, freshly cleansed skin.
What is a toner?
The toner (or toning lotion) is the step that comes after cleansing. It helps tighten pores, remove any remaining impurities, and above all, prepare the skin to receive its moisturizing skincare products. Some toners contain soothing ingredients such as floral water from chamomile or hydrosol from rose, which are perfect for calming redness and moisturizing the skin. Others are designed for combination skin and oily skin, with ingredients such as thermal water, epilobium, or certain essential oils (lavender, grapefruit, geranium) for a purifying effect.
Micellar Water or Toner: What Are the Differences?
Composition and effects
Micellar water is a cleanser that attracts and removes impurities, whereas toner is a skincare product that tones and moisturizes. Some toners contain alcohol, which can be irritating for sensitive skin, whereas micellar water is often gentler. Toners enriched with hydrosol, floral water, or thermal water are pretty good because they provide a feeling of freshness when applied.
Application and use
I use micellar water with a cotton pad (washable is even better!) and after two or three swipes my skin is clean and ready for the day. Toner, on the other hand, is applied after cleansing gel, either with a cotton pad or directly with your hands, patting it onto the eye area and face. I really enjoy including it in my routine; it gives my skin a super refreshing effect and boosts its radiance. The little bonus is when the formula smells good! I have to admit, I always look forward to this little beauty appointment with myself.
How to Choose Between Micellar Water and Toner for Your Skin
Sensitive and dry skin
If your skin is sensitive or dry, I recommend a gentle micellar water enriched with floral water from cornflower or chamomile hydrosol. To complete your routine, a moisturizing toner can also be a great addition to provide even more freshness and comfort.
Oily and combination skin
If, like me, you sometimes struggle with shine and visible pores, a purifying toner will be your best ally. Look for ingredients such as thermal water, witch hazel hydrosol, or astringent agents (substances that tighten pores) that help balance the skin.
Normal and combination skin
Lucky you! Your skin can handle pretty much anything. A gentle micellar water or a moisturizing toner will work perfectly; it’s up to you to decide what you prefer in your routine.
How to Incorporate Them into Your Routine
Micellar water: a simple and quick step
I use micellar water morning and evening for quick makeup removal and cleansing, for example after a good Pilates class! If I’m wearing waterproof makeup, I choose a suitable version to remove everything properly without rubbing.
Toner: the finishing touch
After cleansing, I apply a little toner and my skin is ready for its serum and moisturizing cream. It’s a step that really makes a difference, especially when I want soft, radiant skin.
Conclusion
So, micellar water or toner? It all depends on your skin type and your needs! If you want quick and effective cleansing, micellar water is ideal. If you’re looking for toned skin that’s prepared to receive its moisturizing skincare products, toner is your best ally. Personally, I like using them together for maximum effect. And you, are you more of a micellar water person or a toner person?
